better finish, better edge longevity, easier knife swapout, and I completely agree with Fred, the noise reduction is the real treat. I notice a 10 decibel difference in sound going from a standard cutterhead to a spiral on my woodmaster.

The only downside is that I have a deeper cut capacity on my standard cutterhead (3/16” vs. 1/8”), which doesn’t matter much to me for the way that I normally use it, but it could be a factor for some.

I wrote an article on this topic after upgrading my jointer with a spiral cutterhead: http://www.wwgoa.com/articles/product-reviews/spiral-cutterheads-for-the-jointer/

The article is specific to jointers, but after upgrading my planer as well, I can tell you that I notice and appreciate the difference much more on the planer.
