What scale of work do you need to do mortising in?

For furniture, a 1/2” mortise chisel is useful because the
joints are bigger, but for cabinet doors a 1/4” or 5/16”
is the better size.

Japanese chisels are nice to collect. They work especially
well on softer woods.
