You could run both motors from a VFD or just the main motor and switch out the feed motor for a single phase. A RPC would work well but might be overkill for a single machine but could be a good investment if you plan on getting more 3 phase machinery later on.

3 HP doesn’t seem like a lot for an 18” planer but depending on what thou plan on doing with it could be completely adequate. With sharp blades it should do well if you aren’t trying to hog off 1/4” from an 18” wide white oak slab. If it’s any consolation, the 3hp motor certainly wasn’t rated by the same folks making 6hp shop vacuums.
