”It’s kinda cool when hoarder relatives die. Like they left ten thousand time capsules by accident”

Actually, it is not, in no shape or form.
My father, who died a little over a year ago was a hoarder. I wound up helping clean up that mess. Most of it, all we could do was back a dump trailer up to the door and start shoveling. It’s bad enough the turmoil family members go through when a hoarder is alive trying to get the mentally ill person to see what they’re doing to themselves. Then after they’re dead, and you’re finally even allowed without restrictions, you go in and get the pleasure of truly seeing the filthy and discusting way they were living.
Hoarding is a mental disease. I get the point that the original post was made in jest, but I wanted to come tell ya’ll from first hand experience that if you know anyone who is truly a hoarder and you care about them, try your best to get them some help before it gets too bad. The longer you wait, the worse the problem gets, and the harder it is to get the il lperson any help at all.
We went round and round for about five year with my father. We checked him into mental facilities and he’d check himself out. According to aothorities, he was not a danger to himself, so they couldn’t stop him from leaving on his own free will. He got down in his health and needed physical therapy at home. His hoarding, by this time, was so bad that the home health nurses, after one visit, refused to go back into that home. Still the authorities would not help. When we tried to go clean up his place, he’d call the law and have them excort us off the property. We were powerless to do squat about him, or the conditions he was living in untill ultimately, it killed him. Then, as I stated before, we had the pleasure (sarcasm, it was actually very unpleasant) of cleaning up the discusting mess.
