My first project with my new table saw will be a replacement for our undersized utensil organizer. I planned to use either a cedar board or whitewood with a stain for my wood choice, but I wasn't sure about how to finish this since it will be in contact with eating utensils. Are there any finishes I should stay away from? Also, any finishes that could be an issue with the utensils over time as far as metal degradation? The utensils are standard stainless steel Oneida flatware.
Stay away from radioactive isotopes. If you are really concerned about some kind of contamination don't put on a finish. Wood itself has enough tannic acid to kill most germs. Other than that weld one up from stainless steel or store your flatware in Ball canning jars. Honestly anything including paint will work ONCE DRIED COMPLETELY. (Like say a momth or more)
