I am trying to refurbish this drill for a friend of mine as a late christmas present and am wondering how I can fix the "collar" on this. I hope you can see the crack where the handle joins the mechanism. Thanks for your help.

That is a tough one. I think I would try to remove the handle. It looks like it has a threaded rod or bolt that holds it on. If you can get to the this end of the handle I think I would loot at a small piece of very thin brass tubing or maybe copper tubing that would fit this. The copper or brass can be heated in a conventional baking oven and it will slip over this and tighten provided it is small enough it doesn't fall off in the beginning. It needs to be a size that will almost go on in the beginning. Then you could sand this down and polish it a bit to dress it up. This is mostly cosmetic anyway. I don't think you will ever replace it unless you can replace the entire handle. I made some Christmas ornaments and used brass ferrules like this but I was turning the end of the ornament to fit the ferrule. All I can think of right now.

I'm thinking "duct tape" is the wrong answer!

The crack could be welded and then ground & filed smooth. What is the metal? Aluminium, cast metal? I would think that a good welder should be able to handle it.

Thanks for your replies. I'm thinking that I might just clean it up and leave it and just call it "character". Or maybe I could find another old junker with a good handle to replace the cracked one.
Thanks again.
