I find when making pieces that the most important thing to do that helps with the item being square is to use stop blocks and cut all of the same sides at one time. I know this sounds elementary but it makes a world of difference when putting the item together. Even if you are cutting a miter, use a stop block and then cut all the same sides at one time. If the opposite sides are a different length, readjust the the stop block for the opposing sides, then run all of them. This also helps to keep the piece from wandering as it enters the blade.
