Broken Drill Bit

Has anyone else had this happen?

This is a 9/16" brad point bit. The tip just broke off in the middle of some white oak. It did not hit any embedded metal. It just broke. The tip stayed in the wood and I had to drill it out with another (high speed) drill bit.

How sharp was it? Those bits are great, but they have an inherent weakness in the spiral. If the bit was getting dull, you were using a high torque drill, and somehow moved it off center, it could have broken like that.

In response to the "how sharp was it question" - - This is a seldom used bit. I'm sure I have used it a few times in the past, but not very often. I have never sharpened it. I would say that it was "close to new" sharp.

Yes, I assume it was made in China.

As an FYI - This is a Rockler bit. They market it under their own name. The smallest bit in the set (1/4") broke the first time I used it. The shaft broke. It's my theory that the shafts on this style of drill is not adequately strong on the small bits. No other bit in the set has broken (yet).

I think this is strange because the shaft did not break - the tip broke off. I've never experienced anything quite like it.

It is metallurgy. Ii have used ship augers up to 1 1/4 diameter and 18" long. They lasted for years until we filed the spur off the side sharpening it. After it is gone, they don't work as well.
