I use small pieces for turning spires or finials. Those have all been pen blank sizes but a friend gave me a piece last month that is 5.5” in diameter, 17” long and weighs 12.5 #
My experience with turning small pieces it can be quite brittle but it really polishes up well right off the tool. Katalox wood looks quite similar but according to Texas A&M grows about 3x taller. Katalox is also called Mexican Royal Ebony.
