Sometimes the chucks don’t get seated all the way. Before you give up on it take a hammer, withdrawl the teeth all the way into the chuck, and lightly tap the chuck into the headstock. You don’t want to drive it in so far it never come out. But you do want to hit it so that it reseats itself if it is stuck on something.

This also works on drill presses that have morse taper chucks.
