Hi,

I am looking at getting a bandsaw, mainly for resawing capabilities. I do most of my work with hand tools, but when it comes to resaw a board, its better done with a bandsaw. I do not expect to work on large piece of furnitures, so I suspect 12 to 14 " of resaw capacity is enough. Should I look for used saws on craigslist/ebay or able to get a new one at that price?

I have the Rikon as well. While I havent used it a lot yet. The main reason I got it was for its resaw capabilities and its still 110 powered. While my technique still needs work. The machine powered thru all I have thrown at it so far. About 9-10" walnut was no problem. I also paid $699 for it. I would say its worth a look based on your price range.

Powermatic and Laguna are great - if you can afford them. I bought a Grizzly G0457 14" bandsaw for less than $1000 (including shipping) and have been pretty pleased with it. Four years old now and has given me no problems. The only drawback is the odd blade size (104") that I haven't found anywhere else other than Grizzly, but their customer service is pretty good. I beleive I chose this saw after it received Best Value in a FW review.

I also bought the Rikon 14" Deluxe, it replace a 12" Sears Craftsman. I have used large industrial BS's at work, and they wouldn't have the resaw capacity of the Rikon. If you look at Craigslist you might get lucky and find on old heavy BS, but they usually don't have a large resaw capacity to width ratio, but they do have a larger table. The miter slots don't have the t slot.
I looked at the Laguna, the Grizzly and the Rikon and for the price I chose the Rikon. I think it was worth every penny, so far.

I am still using and griping about my ShopSmith BS. Since I'm not redy to shell out big bucks for one, I slowly gathering info and input like this so I'd know what to get when the time comes.

Just replaced an old Craftsman 12" my father left me with a new Grizzly 14" Polar Bear series with the riser. I looked at the Rikon and was very impressed, but couldn't justify twice the money. I may regret it down the line, but right now I am very pleased with the Grizzly.

yrob - I agree totally with steven H. I have the 17" extreme series and have tortured it sawing big Hedgeapple logs, resawing long (really heavy) ole doug fir 2×12s, and then it will cut like a scrollsaw with the Carter stabilizer. The extras included with the Extreme series more than make up for the price difference. I also got lucky and ordered mine when they had a free shipping deal going on (only on this model). Buy it, you'll love it.
