Ok …so now i work for a waterbed store and we get a lot of free 2 X 10 pine boards from old waterbed frames(some people get into the new softside style). Pine wood isn't the most beautiful board in the world so i like to make it look a little more exotic than it really is . I decided i would and a dark stripe down the middle of the board but wanted to look like it it was the actual wood that made this darker color . First off i had to split the board in half . My band saw only opens up to about 6 inches so i have to cut the board in half to fit in my band saw to resaw..i really wanted it to look seamless so i decided i would follow the grain to cut the board in half( i didnt get it perfect LOL but it came out ok ).

Wish i would have taken more pictures of the glue up on the boards and the box . Let me just say the glue up on the box was way to much fun (thought i was gonna lose it LOL) I made it so that the top lap jointed the sides and ends …and the ends lap jointed the sides ….ughhhh. needless to say it was a humbling experience .After the glue dried i routed the corners with a round over bit . Looked pretty good . I proceeded to my sanding . I tried something new.. usually i just sand it down to 220 then start my finishing. This time i sanded to 220 then wet the wood to raise the grain and sanded again 220 and wet again . I then sanded it with 400 grit and wet again then 600 wet and sand . it really did look nice and smooth !!! Next was to tape off where i was going to add the walnut stain stripe down the middle and sides. I tested some clear tape the other day and got a good result so thats what i used . The clear tape so that i could see the grain and use a razor to cut on the grain line .

After cutting out the tape i stained the middle with dark walnut stain . I looks pretty good but i dont know should i stain the natural pine a crazy color like yellow
lite blue
? or should i leave it the way it is ???

"...Pine wood isn't the most beautiful board in the world so i like to make it look a little more exotic than it really is…" Oh I don't know . . . I rather think pine has some beautiful lines when finished properly! The problem with pine is not necessarily its 'lack of beauty.' The problem with pine is its physical characteristics - splinters, soft, moves a lot, weakness, sappy… etc. But, the wood itself has a rear beauty to it and your box shows that perfectly. Well done!

Thanks everyone …guess ill leave it be =)

Charles.. your right ive seen some really nice pine also …its just people like the exotic stuff and it sells better =)
Rance…i used my smart phone to take the pictures ..its a pretty big file ??? dont know why its so small .
Ksslim… say what LOL

OK so this morning i went to the shop and started work on the hinge. I wanted to make a really crazy looking hinge for the box . Id been thinking of making a hinge with crazy looking fingers or claws on the top ..so this is what i came up with . First i cut the slots for the hinge on a 2×6 piece of pine . I pulled out my trusted finger joint jig and got started

After cutting the finger joints i split the 2 X into 1/2 layers and taped the edges together so that i can match both top hinges.

after taping them i proceeded to cut the top design . Ok i had no clue what was gonna turn up so i let the bandsaw do the work and i just moved it where ever it wanted to go LOL i came out with this …

as you can see he bottom hinge came out nothng like i had drawn …i like better what actually came out .

i set the hinge up to be sculped and went at it

so this is what is gonna look like what do you think is it too much ??? another question how would be the best way to attach it. I want to finish the box then attach the hinge but if there is a better way im all ears

I like the box with the contrast colors - without the hinge. I think the beauty of the box can stand alone without having the hinges trying to compete with it. The box has elegance in its simplicity so the hinges, so I think they would be distractions. . . . my two cents worth.

do you think i should cut the fingers off and flip the hinge around…less flashy…i agree with you guys ..i thought it might be to much. Also when i cut open the box the bottom expanded about 1/16th of an inch ….i never really had that problem before what cold that be from
?the wet sanding (it was my first try at it on bear wood)
thanks Rance

I am with everyone else about the hinges. They take away from the beauty of the box with their size and design. If they were used on a box didn't have contrasting colors they could work and then I would cut them down about 50% so there again they wouldn't overshadow the box.

'Bear wood'? I thought it was Pine. (Just teasing) :) I expect your 1/16" expansion comes from the wet sanding. Give it a few days in a dry environment to let it re-acclimate. It might just come back to where it was. And don't seal that cut edge until it does.

Keep those hinges around for another box. For this box though, I think a nice wooden hinge would work, just not a big one. I started to say make it contrasting, but maybe not.

By the say, I wanted to but forgot to thank you for your idea of cutting a section off, dark staining it and gluing them back together. It totally changed the look of a plain piece of pine. And since I have a lot of let over 1×6 pine board that I've been wondering what to do with, Now I know - - thanx to your great idea. You proved that pine is not totally plain and not beautiful. It just needs a little help - sometimes! I probably won't wet sand it to 600, maybe not even 400 ! ! ! :D I'm a little on the lazy side, you know, LOL
