If there are only smaller checks in the sole it should work just fine. For a great user plane do like this:
- Plane the sole absolutely flat or use abrasive paper on flat surface
- Use fine steelwool and alcohol to clean the body. Dont go overboard here. Perhaps scrape off paint
- If you are lucky and the mouth is about 48mm buy a toothing blade here: https://www.dictum.com/de/werkzeuge/holzbearbeitung-metallbearbeitung/hobel/hobeleisen-und-spanbrecher/702237/ersatzeisen-fuer-ece-zahnhobel
- Do like dhazelton suggest and oil&wax NO oil on the sole but lotsa wax.
- Make a fitting wedge and go make some shavings!
