Since you’re painting it, it won’t matter all that much what you use as filler. You could fill with epoxy, bondo, wood filler, etc. You’ll definitely want to use a primer before painting, but I’m not sure about a final clear coat…I suppose it’d add another layer of protection. Just be sure it’s something that’s compatible over the paint you use.
