Yellow pine is a bitch to stain, but I love that stuff. Wood conditioners are mostly some type of thinned down polly, shellac or even water based polly would work thin it down at least 50/50. . If you use a full strength shellac or other sealer you wont get much stain to take. What I like to do is seal it up then mix a little stain in my clear coat which makes it a toner, works much better than trying to stain it out right. I don’t recommend pollyshades. You’ll get a ton of different answers do some test samples on scrap.
