The general rule for tenon thickness, Tim, is 1/3 of the thickness of the board which will sprout the tenon.

I don’t know of a general rule for depth, but too deep can be lots of work for not much benefit. Using the same formula, 5/8 would probably be fine, 3/4 better, 7/8 overkill. That’s my $.02!
