Dang. $177 with shipping. I hope he didn't have to pay sales tax.

FWIW, i have sold items that were barely used and readily available new for more than new price. Two things (maybe more) come into play at times.

Somebody gets all caught up in "winning" a popular item. Damn the torpedos… I want this !!!

Also, some people have their Paypal balance to spend and will pay new price for used or slightly more than new price for new just because its so convenient. I have actually done this before.

I've heard that sometimes international bidders will bid high or the actual retail price because it is cheaper than buying the tool new. I believe it has to do with international shipping costs of a used item compared to a new item. They have to claim the item used or something.

23 bids? Final bid within reach of retail? Total silliness.
I bid $5000 on a Stanley #18 once. Serious.
There was a little bidding war at the end & I did it out of sheer frustration.
Dodged a bullet on that one.

I've greatly overpaid before, Wayne. I'd a dude with a pretty substantial ego, admittedly. I've never resorted to any of the snipe systems but I've been in "peeing" contests before. Thankfully, I collect tools, not cars ;)

And stay away from my #8 frog, Wanye!!!! I need this frog desperately and have a ridiculous bid on it. The Seller refused a buy-now at $50. See what I'm talking about? $50 for a frog, strictly ego driving that;)

sniping program or not,,you still have to enter your maximum bid (in a sniping program),, so a person can always outbid a sniping program. Right?? I mean if I bid $300 and the sniping person bids to $250,,he just cost me $250.
Also,If you're fine with your maximum bid, then it doesnt matter if you bid the first day or in the last 10 seconds. Either time you get outbid-THAT was the most you wanted to pay. Now if the seller bids on his own item and wins "by accident"-does he pay ebay for listing it?? And if he cancels payment then how many times can he get away with that?

I'm thinking a photo of your planes in a custom cabinet… just sayin…. I only buy a few off ebay. Stuff I have a hard time finding or strange stuff. I really don't worry about people jacking the price. I make the buy decision on what I am willing to pay. If I'm looking for extream deals, I got to flea markets, street sales, etc where the sellers are not well educated.

Marc, the only advantage of waiting till the end to bid is that occasionally you can "sneak up" on an item that no one has expressed much interest in.

Let's say a particular plane is up for auction that you would be willing to pay $50 for. The opening bid is $10, and you put in your maximum bid of $50 on day one. Now some guy comes along and bids $15. Oops. Right away he is outbid because of your maximum bid. Now he bids $30, but it's still not enough, so the guy starts to think this plane must be worth more than he thought. He keeps bidding until he finally outbids you. You don't want to go over $50, so you lose the auction.

On the other hand, if this other guy bids first, he might have put in a maximum of $40, and your last minut max bid of $50 gets you the plane for just over $40.

It doesn't always work that way, of course, but I think it's best to always wait till the end to enter your max bid.

hi Charlie, I definately get it,,i always wait till the last 10 seconds myself. I just dont think sniping programs are what make the bids go up very high,,or sellers bidding themselves. Thats the only way I can stick to my maximum bid. Then when I lose I say " I shoulda went up 10" . :)

Hey Al, quit misspelling my name or I will EEE you again…

I like your plane photo, I have mine in three different places and yours looks pretty impressive…

I will take my camera to the shop and see if I can gather mine together… jus' for fun?

AML III, nothing stops you, but I don't see the point of bidding on your own things, if you want a certain price, put a minimum bid on it… yes?

Marc: I agree that sniping programs don't cause price run ups.

August: I often wonder about collusion in the bid process. It wouldn't be hard for someone to put a plane up for auction, claim it was very rare, and then have a friend keep upping the bid.

jusfine, I think I know the problem. If that is a donkey on your pic, well… Eee aw Eee aw Eee always says that !

I just got a baby 101 at the last second. Had been bidding up with two others, so let up and came in at the 10 sec mark.
