If I go ply I could cut any panels pretty snug b/c the expansion wouldn t be as bad, right? Alternatively, I m thinking of putting something in the groove to prevent shifting (eg. weatherstripping)

that is correct plywood is a lot more stable then hardwood …...1/2 inch would be plenty strong enough


I ve used a small dab of silicon caulk in dados and picture frames to reduce shifting and movement. Might be an option for you.

and also do this with caulk about an inch bead on all 4 sides ….. just make sure it is silicon
