I think I must be like you and use too much glue. I get quite a bit of squeeze out but my theory is that I want to be certain the joints are as strong and not glue starved. I apply the glue to both surfaces and then spread it with one of those plastic/heavy cardboard credit/ID cards received in the mail from places that want you to sign up for something. After clamping for about 45 minutes, I use a paint scraper and lift off as much of the semi-hardened glue as practical. There’s always a little left under the clamps that needs to be removed later.
