You might want to call a few lumber dealers in your neck of the woods and see what 4/4 rough walnut is going for. That would give you some idea of what is fair.

My first reaction was to offer him $2 per bf and see what happens. But if it seems like he is not real savvy about lumber, you might do better just giving him a lump sum price. For example, “Well, some of this is split, and there are quite a few knotholes… I’ll give you $2,000 for the whole pile.”
