So i want to make a simple box but I want to use something other than butt joints. So just wondering is there a way to cut finger joints on a table saw without a dado blade? Is there any jigs I could make?
If you do a search for finger or box joint jig you can find some on this site. You might have to modify them so you can make several passes rather then one with a dado blade.
If you have a router, router table and straight bit, it's not hard to make a jig. Use a backer board because the router will give you more tear out than a dado stack.
You can go on You Tube for video on making Greene & Greene style finger joints with a router. The video is "Greene & Greene style finger joints " by David Wade. Very interesting and very easy. It is also a very fast and very accurate way of doing it.
before i built my router table i tried making finger joint jigs for my tablesaw (without dado blade, because thats illegal in europe) but i couldn't get good results.
wich is weird because it's the exact same principle as router table jigs!
now that i have a router table i made 2 finger joint jigs for it, easy to make, rapid to operate and clean cuts!
You can also saw these by hand pretty quickly and just chisel out at the ends. It doesn't really take much time, but you need to mark it out and saw it accurately. Maybe not the best idea if you haven't got much experience with hand sawing and chiseling. A scroll saw also works well if you have one.
Thanks Steve for the interesting jig
I am also making one like yours.
I am thinking of making three slinding key plates rather than one.
Each attached to the sled with screw rods w/ knobs into the back plate where you made the screw holes.
each key plate will accomidate a different size key to be able to make several sizes with the same sled.
Since this is your idea I would appreciate your comments..
Thanks

Dado blades are illegal in Europe?
No offence but Europe has some of the weirdest laws I have heard of. Does it have something to do with having to remove the overarm guard to make your Box Joint passes?

There's also the information to the book where I found the pattern. Enjoy!
