If you can, cut your post with the grain running at a diagonal, looking from the end. That way it will look almost the same all the way around. Older Stickley pieces used the veneer method you’re talking about, and all of them I ever saw were cracked. If I need post that large, I usually make each one out of four pieces of wood,
mitered together to form the post. My $0.02.
