I am turning wine bottle stoppers and just learned that certain woods ( Bloodwood, Purpleheart , and others) will turn a gray color if not finished properly. I was told I need a finish with a UV protector. What finish should I use ? What other woods will fade like this ? The color looks great when it is freshly turned. I would like to keep using these woods for the variety of the colors.
Sunlight (UV) is the enemy. Use a varnish with UV inhibitors and keep the piece out of direct sunlight. It will eventually darken anyway but you can delay/slow the process.
Also, it's a good idea to use dyes and pigments to stain the wood the same as its natural color before finishing. Most stains are more lightfast than natural wood. This is why I usually stain walnut with walnut stain.
If the wood is stained then finished with a product that has UV inhibitors and is kept away from direct sunlight, it may retain its color for years.
