Thanks for the idea, Debbie. It may seem like a better approach at the first glance but it can get really tricky.

We’re reading top to bottom.. and imagine having as low as 3 new comments on some blog.. after reading one of the new ones (and often we have quite long comments) you’d need to scroll back up to find that next comment instead of just continue reading as in the current approach.

As Wayne said there is always new link that should send you directly to the first new comment.

I will also consider adding Add new comment link that will bring you directly to new comment form.

And if you want to go to the bottom of the page you can always use Ctrl + End and then just Page Up to find the comments you want to read.
