"Riding board. It's a long bench with a slot in the middle. Through the slot is placed a slim beam with a simple foot-pedal at the bottom and, projecting about 8'' from the top of said bench, a block of rough wood."
"It's a simple 17/18th cent. work bench. You use the foot peddle to tighten the block/vise block to hold the bit you're working on in place."
He wants me to build him this piece. He works for a local museam, as a re-enactor… but doesn't wanna build it.
He says, he'll pay Materials +$75 labour. And Due before May… I think I know what he is refering to… But I can't remember what its called… or what it looks like… Not to mention, some of what he is telling me… doesnt make sence… like:
-- "Something that won't shatter with a 240lb dude working on it. Stout cut hard pine should do." [Never heard of Stout Cut Hard Pine]
---"By that I meant hard pine, with an apox. 15'' width, and an aprox. 8 inch down-draw."[I dont think I can get boards that big… and if so.. my crane isn't working.. lol]
This looks like a fun project - the kind of project I would enjoy doing.
I recently built am old fashion cradle. I tried to make it as authentic looking as possible and I thought often about how woodworkers 200+ years ago would have made it. FYI - I used no hardware.
Thanks Patron. Believe it or not…he wants a dumbed down version of that.. lol… no incline…
Rich: Yea, looks like a fun project. I am going to try to get up to Braintree, Mass, This week. To have an actual look at the orginal he has. That way I can hopefully get some measurements. This may be the project that gives me the excuse I have been looking for, to by my TS.
--He also said, it doesnt need to be 100% authentic; Me and my pnematic friends can put it together… lol… besides, Im fresh out of silver nails…
Yea! This looks like a very interesting Project. Might do one of those myself.
I'll look forwrd to seeing how yours turned out newbie. Do they (original ones) usually put any kind of a finish on these.
That's a good Link David. Thank you. I'm going down to LV Tomorrow. For $13.95 and "easy to do" so they claim…LOL.. I'm going to pick up a set of those plans.
It looks fun. Now I just have to convince him that he can't have a seat that is 15×9… I told him, my crane isn't working, even if I can find a beam that large… lol…
Would this have been done, back in colonail days, with a saw, or would it have been hand chopped with an axe? Im debating whether to do it with a hatchet, or my handsaw. He said I can use power tools…but wheres the fun in that… lol.. except for any nailiing.. my pnematic friends are helping with that… lol…
My Grandfather had one very much like this and I believe he made his from a 2" X 12" oak flooring beam which should be available or even one made of hard pine.
The length of the seat area and of the down draw area can be adjusted to fit the person who is useing the horse and the legs were basicly just over sized dowel rods or I think he actualy just bought some premade table legs and cut them to legenth for the height he wanted and installed them with a slight angle. Not sure this would require a TS to do though, he just used a hand saw, drill, hand plane and some chisels and bit of sandpaper and did all the joints as pegs except for a couple of lag bolts for the swivel point of the clampig bar. I think the only finish it ever got was years of sweat.
Maybe you can post a picture of the original that he has.
newbie
make him the one you want to make and work with after its finished
and say to him take or lieve it…LOL
I´ll bett he wuold be more than happy nomatter if its a simple or a complicated you deliver
whats matter is that you have fun and learn while you make it .
Your Post #17. Are you refering to the Picture you posted in your Post #13? It's the same picture as mine in Post #6 . It's from Lee Valley via the Link that David posted in Post #3.
Yes. "newbie ' Post A Picture of what You/He are talking about please. Just DO IT! Maybe that way WE get to see Your First Project Posting.
You've mentioned a Crane a few times. Why do you need that?? Also 15×9 & 15×19?
Well. There's not a whole lot I can do about what you like and don't like. Is there. I'm certainly not going to lose any Sleep over it.
However YOU ask a LOT of Questions on a LOT of Your Posts and YOU get a LOT of Answers.
I asked a few simple questions in My Comments in #17 Above and #4 along with a Picture and you DIDN'T answer them did you! I Posted, what I thought would be a couple of Usefull Pictures in #17…"Would these be of any help?" No answer.
I've known of you for quite a while now. Same thing way back then. I made similar comments back then also with the same results. I received a few PM's both then and now i.e. "Your Wasting Your Time Rick etc.etc." (To be Polite) I stopped reading your Posts. "90" Posts of Your Own and "588" Posts in "153" Days. "0" Projects and "0" Pictures in any of your Posts.
Big Mistake Starting again. Waste of MY time.
I'm Done, Gone, and Don't Bother. This is off My Watch List and You're Blocked.
For those of us, mature enough not to pull bologne like that:
The reason I didn't post a photo, is because, 20 other people have already, so kindly, done the same. No sence in beating a dead horse.
--"Why do you need a crane" ...well my friend, that is what, we who are proficient in English, Call that a metaphor… [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metaphor]
----Also, when reading 120 posts, along with other stuff, its very hard to catch every little thing. I try to thank and answer as many posts as I can, but alas, I only have 2 eyes….
Due to Recent Issues, THANKYOU EVERYBODY, save rick..
Rick, Yea it is the same picture I just copied it and added some measurements to try and give newbie an idea of the size that his relative was talking about. That way he might not have to wait to fix his crane to build it.
WOW!36 Days! Maybe He's Still Fixing His Metaphorical Crane! (IUM) ;-}}}
