I received this in my personal e-mail day before yesterday. I have taken out the name of the person, but it was a girl's name. What I am trying to figure out is where did she find my e-mail on here? I looked but to no avail YET! and has anyone got anything similar?
I keep thinking my e-mail has got to be here somewhere yet I really can't find it.
I just know I am going to feel soooo stupid when I get a reply that says Allison your e-mail is right here. :) But this kind of e-mail really bugs me, ESPECIALLY when it uses Lumberjocks as a ways and means to get to me, ya know?

If it came as a PM, then of course the person did not have to know your email address… they just signed up as a member and PM'd you.

If the message came to you as a regular email, then maybe they are not talking about your LJ profile at all. A lot of those emails go out assuming the recipient has a Facebook profile.

I got the same thing the first day I was on here. Same wording, same weird feeling. The message came to me as a private message through LJ. I simply deleted it and moved on. But I already decided that if i got a second one, I'd be making some changes.

PMs sent to you on LumberJocks.com generate a "notification" e-mail that GOES to the e-mail address you provided, when you registered on this site.

So … what might LOOK LIKE this person e-mailed you … is probably simply an indication that he/she PM'd you-sent you a private message.

This would NOT mean that he/she got your e-mail address.

Look into it. I'm pretty sure that's what happened.

It's probably just spam, although be aware that in coming months the number of emails similar to that that you receive NOT associated with lumberjocks will probably skyrocket. Read this tech article on slashdot.org: http://yro.slashdot.org/story/11/01/17/0534244/Dating-Site-Creates-Profiles-From-Public-Records for a little more info why. I realize the company is starting in Australia, but really, how long until they expand. Watch out degoose!

Essentially, if you have a facebook profile, and you have not taken the steps to hide your information (such as email, sex, and relationship status) this dating site's computer will find it and automatically set up an account for you in their dating program. Which could lead to you receiving emails regarding relationships from people you don't even know, that already know about you. Now realize this is a scary concept, but it's also a worst case scenario. Taking the easy steps to reduce the amount of personal info you have on websites (the ones you can control) will pretty much eliminate the chances of this being an issue (and reduce your spam!). And a good email spam filter will catch most of it anyways.

Hmmm. Not sure our email is out there on this site either. I'll have to check. But funny, today I did a search on google for old pictures of the gasconade river. I'm just looking for old pictures like back in the steamboat days. And there I was. My boatdock on LJ's site. Couldn't believe it. It was about 3 or 4 pages in though, but still. Kind of cool, but kind of not….I know you know not to open emails from people you don't know, so I'm not gonna lecture. But it is a weird one. From what I have found you can click on it and read it, but don't go any farther than that. I have seen that same sentence before in emails that I have received from people I don't know. Usually women. Love matters. It's either a virus or a scam of some sort. Thanks for the warning.

I answered her email and we've had several long chats. She even called me when she was stranded in London and needed $600 to get home. She's a nice gal and she introduced me to some other nice folks. Why, it was through one of the other folks that I learned of an inheritance I have in Ethiopia. I just need to come up with the $ needed to pay the probate fees and I'll be RICH! I can't thank her enough.

papadan:

There might be another way to phrase that, but … I think you DO raise a good issue.

I have never had any reason to believe that Martin has shared or sold our e-mail addresses with or to … anybody.

It would be a good thing if EscalateMedia-the new owners-told us what THEIR policy is with regard to privacy, and the use or NON-USE of our e-mail addresses.

Nathan ? Safe to assume there IS a policy, applicable to all your properties ? Can you point us to it, or share it with us ?

Thanks !

But love does matter, right? My yahoo account established way back in the site's infancy (yes, I'm that old) gets an average of 1000 spams a month (not kidding), rendering it functionally useless. One day, when I have a month or so off, I'll individually blacklist the senders. All good advice above.

Email addresses used during the registration are ALWAYS kept private. Escalate will not share them with third parties either. It'd be plain stupid. When you get the private message a notification is sent to your email but your email address is never disclosed to the private message sender.

You can check out our Privacy Policy by clicking on the link in the footer.

Allison-The spammer/lowlife didn't get your email address via LJ's … they probably harvested it from the address book of someone you correspond with that doesn't have adequate intrusion detection or spam control software on their PC.

Just make sure you have a good A/V program on your machine, keep you firewall updated, and don't respond to any of this garbage.

I am in the computer software business, and have a number of email accounts for various purposes. Because they have to be public (so customers can find us and spend money!), we use fairly sophisticated intrusion prevention, spam control, and anti-virus systems.

For my home internet and email, I use ESET ( http://www.eset.com/ ).

Martin, I haven't had any security problems on here at all so far. At the very beginning I messed up and answered a couple of PM's from my email instead of going into my PM center here but that was my stupid mistake. By doing so I guess I was giving the person my email address. However, I didn't notice any problem from it fortunately. Overall, I imagine that ya'll probably run a fairly tight ship. Obviously, there are security risks anytime that you go online.
