The cylinder type hinges you are talking about are probably barrel hinges like these – -

I’ve used them in the past. Note that they are metric and you really need a metric drill bit. Also, I advise that when you first put them into the hole, make sure you have them aligned right. It is sometimes very difficult to pull them out or rotate them once they are in place (even before you tighten them down).
