I need to match the color on a repair on an antique sewing machine cabinet.

The wood is QS oak the color is a reddish hue.
I've also got one I need to re-veneer same issue.

I've tried a couple test pieces and having a devil of a time matching it.

I'm thinking dyes will be the way to go but I have no experience mixing them to a color.

Looking for general guidelines, "do's" and "don'ts".

rwe, your question is pretty open ended. I suggest you look at Jeff Jewitt's site. He has a number of different colorants and shows color samples for some of them. I would look at the samples that appear to be the closest for your needs and buy those to test on sample boards. Different colors can be mixed in varying ratios to approach the color you need. Finally, the sample isn't complete until you apply the your top coat which can make a world of difference. HTH
