I just finished a maple top with danish oil and clear paste wax. I put the first coat of wax on with 0000 steel wool. That knocked all the little dust nibs etc. down, and a second coat of wax applied with a rag put a shine on everything. If you let things dry too long putting another coat of wax on and buffing it off will soften the too dry coat and it will buff out much easier.
You definitely need to put on more than one coat of wax.
