I am working on making a lamp for Gracie Barra. The shade will be stained glass. The base will be turned. I am not sure what type of wood the base will be. The reason for this post is to offer a "how to" blog on stained glass. If there is enough interest I will write a blog on how to cut, grind, wrap, and solder the panel, as well as introduce patina. I may do the blog in a series of short videos to make it easier to see each task.
So without further adoo, who's interested?
sounds like a great idea i have worked with stained glass for a very long time, you should show how to do,so more woodworkers use it some of their projects, i have worked in metal, glass, leather and stone all could be use in woodworking also.shinju
You sound like me shinju. I work with leather too and like the multi media. I have wanted to start integrating metal. My dad is an excellent welder and I may have him show me someday. It's hard to find time to do anything other then woodworking. The stained glass and leather started as hobbies and I'm slowly starting to do more and more of it.
yes i know a lot of folks don't know how much other things can be worked into woodworking other than just wood. keep up the good work . maybe folks will get the idea and try it.best of luck, shinju
seems like alot fellow woodwokers are showing interest in it. show them the two ways of securing the glass lead and copper foil. so they can choose which one to use. the lead is better for windows and bigger works, the copper foil is good for small work or lamps aka tiffany style. if you would like some info or help be free to ask.shinju
Shinju, Because I'm making a lamp I am using the copper foil. Would you be interested in sharing how to do the lead? I can show what the lead looks like, how to stretch it, etc but I wouldn't be making anything with it. It will actually take me off my project, which is what is making the blog convenient to begin with.
well show the foil work first, give me time to dig up some old pics of some of the lamps i made. the most common style is what i call country kitchen style, the biggest piece i made was the tiffany style called hanging cherry style i will tell you there was 3,500 pieces of glass in that lamp, i will see what i can come up with. it has been 25 years since that one was made so pics may be hard to find but i will do my best, shinju
I would love to see your process in a blog, and also your finished project.
Funny how many of us woodworkers have similar hobby backgrounds. I also have woked in leather and stained glass off and on for the past 30 years. Leather in the 70's and then stained glass from the 80's on. I will try and find a pic of one of the lamps that I made and post it in this thread. Doesn't have a wood base, but, oh well….............
I would love to see that. I have always wanted to learn stain glass.
