I have been a frequent e-bay buyer and I continue to look for good deals. However, it is getting harder and harder to find good deals on quality tools. You have to maintain discipline and avoid getting sucked into the “I’ve got to win” mindset.

Recently, I bought a like new Lie-Nielsen No. 4 smoothing plane for $230 (normal retail $350). The seller listed it as a “Buy it Now” for $230 and it was only up for sale about 15 minutes. That’s just good luck but it seems you need that to get a good deal anymore.

I have a theory – - I think some e-bay items are attractive to people in countries with high VAT because they avoid the VAT on an e-bay purchase. That can explain why some items are going for more than normal retail.
