Had a package from Lee Valley on my doorstep yesterday, got part of my cyber monday purchase. Here is the factory second router plane:

The only flaw I can see is a near-microscopic speck of a casting pit on the sole, pretty nice. I haven't had the chance to clean and use it yet, but I will try it out tonight.

I also got the large shoulder plane:

Only flaw is a small casting oddity on the lever cap, hidden completely from view in use and japanned/painted over so it's hard to tell. I took it apart, cleaned everything with mineral spirits, waxed/oiled everything, and reassembled. Here are all the parts:

I honed the blade on my 15k waterstone and lapped the back slightly (it was super flat, only a few strokes needed). Took some end grain shavings off cherry, works perfectly:

I also bought a (full priced) toothed blade for my LA jack plane. Hopefully it will reduce tear-out when flattening rough boards. Here is some soft maple before:

And after:

No tear-out at all. I was taking a very heavy cut, too… about 1/32 to 1/16" of the blade was protruding.

I also have a factory second skew block plane coming soon, I'll report back when it arrives.

Happy New Planes day! I got my Cyber Monday LV planes the other day as well - the LA jack plane and the router plane. I can't find anything wrong with the LA jack plane at all, and the only thing I can see on the router plate is that one of the handles has a small amount of gunk on it. I can't seem to scratch it off with my fingernail, but looks like a light sanding will easily take care of it. I cleaned up the LA jack plane and spent a couple minutes honing the blade and was making full width wispy shavings in less than 30 minutes.

Love my factory second LA jack, I use it on nearly everything I make. Mine has a slight hollow on the center of the sole's heel area, doesn't affect use (actually lessens friction a bit like a corrugated plane). I have the 25 deg, 50 deg, and now toothed blades for it. Wish I had a 38 deg blade too (actually, I wish I had ordered several 25 deg blades and honed different microbevel angles).

Received my "right-hand" skew block plane today, but see if you can spot the problem:

They sent me a left-hand body with a right-hand blade. Damn it all. And after I had completely disassembled it, cleaned with mineral spirits, oiled the moving parts, waxed every machined surface, re-assembled, and sharpened the blade. Quite disappointing. Emailed customer service, hopefully they'll set it right tomorrow.

That's not a bevel down plane? :(

Lee Valley got back to me, they're sending a RH body. Good service as always.

Took apart and cleaned, waxed, and sharpened the router plane yesterday. Here it is routing out a rectangle from some cherry, just to try it:

Neither of the blade backs were properly flat or lapped, had to walk them through the stones. Good and sharp now, though.
