You might try using a preseparator on a trash can to remove the shavings prior to them getting to the intake port on the dust collector.

Something like this is what I’m talking about.

If you remove the crossbars, you risk exposing your dust collector blades to harmful amounts of material. Best to leave the cross bars in place in my opinion.
