If you have got the patience, you might be able to make a respectable band saw box with a coping saw. I think the real challenge would be keeping the coping saw square to the wood. I can envision a jig that would help you keep the saw square. Make sure you have a very sharp blade and be prepared to replace the blade one or more times while doing the cutting.

Pick a softer wood and the work would go easier. I’d suggest poplar or aspen.

It will still be a challenge, but your chances of getting something respectable are much better with a coping saw.
