Jointer Question

Hi
I was trying to find the best suggested cutter head speed for my old rockwell jointer.
right now it's turning in the 3500rpm range
I can change pulleys but I don't know how much faster to go.
My Dewalt planer turns at 10,000 at it's a much larger head.

Seems like that wouldn't be a bad thing for the jointer.
Thanks in advance,

I believe 3500 is a good speed for a jointer. Most of the jointers I have seen run at the same speed as the motor and most motors run around 3500.

I'm a little surprised to hear you say that your planer is running at 10,000. I know mine is not.

What advantage do you see in running faster?

My Grizzzly G0593 cutter head runs at 5500rpm (4 cutters per revolution = 22,000 cuts/min).

Personally, I would check with Rockwell/Delta about their max-rated speed on their cutter heads before changing anything. The last thing I would want would be to over-rev the cutter head and have a cutter/blade fly off. That could make a bad day much worse.

I have an older rockwell 4" jointer that I run at about 5000 rpm's. About the vibration, is it a chatter just when you are cutting, it could be dull knives or belt. If it does it under no load, I would think more rpms might make that even worse. Be sure to check your belt for cracks and bearings for play. If your blades are sharpened properly you may just have to slow your feed rate. I think 10000 would be scary.

That's the same jointer, 4 inch rockwell.
It is the chatter while cutting that is annoying.
I just made a honing jig for the blades but I'm waiting to get hold of a Jointer pal.
I will check the belt, but I think it's fairly new and hardly used.
The motor is set in a pivot mount, like a hinge arrangement, and belt tension is controled just by the weight of the motor.
I think I'm going to hard mount the motor and put some tenion on the belt.
The blades feel very sharp.
Thanks for the advice.
