It does not take any power to lift air to the attic. The only additional power required would be the extra effort required to lift the sawdust, which is very small. Even a 1.5hp DC could keep up (assuming it could keep up before). It sounds like a great way to reduce noise.

Since it is in a garage, you need to have a closed system with an air return. You don’t want the DC to suck air back though your water heater vent and bring carbon monoxide into the room.

I have heard that it is good to have around twice the cross section for the return air. If you have 6” pipe going up, you would want at least 8” or larger for the return air. There is no point in choking the system with back pressure for the return air.
