Huge Silver Maple Slabs just slabbed out.. This is from an urban harvest tree that was loaded with burl, some spalting and lots of figure.

Dimensions are 36-48" wide and 2.5" thick and 8' long

Each slab is priced at 1500-2000/ each depending upon size. Rare figure and size for a desk or dining table.

Yeah these big slabs aren't cheap, the take down costs, the slabbing and time and figure all add up. Still my costs are cheap compared to my much larger competition. The figure and price is equivalent to burly big leaf maple, but seldom have I seen a big leaf top that was anywhere close to the size of these.

I air dry then kiln dry the slabs. The thickness makes the top pretty stable. Maple in general is a forgiving wood to dry much like Walnut. White Oak and woods like Holly are a bear to kiln dry properly

As you can see, the Leafs have a scathing offence but there are times when their defence could be slightly more air tight. Perhaps bringing in a big stay at home defenceman at the trade deadline to help out Tomas Kaberle, Luke Schenn, Francois Beauchemin, Ian White & Garnet Exelby?

That might not be too costly in terms of draft picks or young talent and can give this already good team a legitimate shot at winning the Wales Trophy and going to the cup finals.

Do keep in mind that Sydney Crosby's Penguins and Alex Ovechkin's Capitals are really good teams that might be able to challenge the talented Leafs by exploiting their occasional weakspot, namely, defence when playing short handed.

The size coupled with the figure is what makes them expensive. Big Leaf maple burl slabs run 25-45/bf. Ziricote can run 30-50/bf depending upon figure. Big walnut runs 15-25/bf with Claro costing more.

If you check out Talarico Hardwoods, Hearne Hardwoods or Berkshire products, the price I am asking is way cheaper ;)

The price is very good for that size and figuring. I don't have a need for this type of wood right now, but will keep it in mind and will certainly refer anyone interested in a piece. I've seen tables made of large slabs fetching quite nice prices….In a gallery I was recently in, they had a table smaller then the dimensions listed that was asking around 8k….it had some fancy metal work legs but the wood was not overly figured…but decent…The high price probably was more in line with the type of clientele they cater to (Carmel - near Monterey, CA - lots of art galleries and artists).
