Lacquer is the only way to go. It is forgiving and can have a hard and smooth finish. I have woodworker/customers in other states that love that I can finish their furniture in lacquer, because their state doesn’t allow it. I use a pre-catalized lacquer, usually in a medium sheen (medium rubbed effect).
