I have the opportunity to put my shop vac and compressor outside and run the hose and power thru an existing unused dryer vent.
I will need to build a weather proof box (or buy one)
Any tips or advice?
I looked at small deck boxes but they are not tall enough. The area I want to use is about 3×3 and is on the front of the house. A shed would bee too tall for the space.
As long as it it protected from the weather (rain/snow/leaves) is there any reason not to place them outside?
If you have neighbors close they might object to the noise.
If you heat / cool your shop the Shop Vac will be pulling conditioned air into a unconditioned space. This can increase heating / cooling cost.
If your air compressor pulls air from outside you have to deal with the summer humidity causing more condensation in the tank. You will have to drain the tank often from outside.
Even with all this said, one of my projects is to relocate my Dust Collector to a plastic shed outside of the shop. I plan to use a fan to redirect the air back into the shop through a high MERV filter. I will accept the lost of conditioning of the air in exchange for the floor space gained and noise reduction.
Thanks WoodNSawdust for your comments. Some of my neighbors already run their equipment in their driveway, and I just spent some time with my tile saw out there as well. I think I'm good on that point.
I'll devise some way of easily pulling out the compressor out to drain. That had already crossed my mind but I hadn't figured out exactly what to do about it.
Now to figure out if I want to build or buy something. Too bad deck boxes are too short and the small vinyl sheds are too tall.
In the long term plans for my shop I will be adding a larger air compressor (around 60 gal). I was going to ask a machinist friend if he could plumb a drain line with a ball valve at the end so I could drain it outside without having to crawl into the cubby where the unit will be. Maybe a 1/4 inch copper line.
