I used similar sanders for years with varying degrees of success, but bought a Ryobi “Corner Cat” a few years ago and haven’t used another brand since. I go thru one about every 18 – 24 months, but at ~$30 a pop, just consider them to be a consumable item, and replace them when they give up the ghost.

I use a 5” DeWalt ROS for heavier sanding jobs, and finish up with the Ryobi.

I loaned my Makita belt sander to my SIL a couple of years ago and he still has it. I don’t even miss it. – lol
