bigike, this bench can be setup for left or right – the vises can be moved to either end. I might be selling some items, and if I do, I’ll be sure to offer them to LJs first. Some of the Grizzly benches are nice, I guess it would depend on which model it is.

gbvinc, I’m planning to build a bench based on the Shaker style benches with a few modifications. The Shaker benches usually have cabinets that come all the way to the underside of the worktop, and I’m going to leave a space. I’m also going to put a sliding deadman on it which is completely not authentic. I haven’t settled on the vises yet, but I’m willing to abandon authenticity for function. The top and the legs will be hickory (very hard and fairly inexpensive) and the cabinet will probably be paintgrade (although I might make them hickory as well). I may begin doing some off-site demos, in which case I will also need a workbench that is portable. I’m trying to wrap my head around how to make it heavy enough to use and light enough to transport. You said you were going to make a new-fangled bench – the John White style?
