What brand of rattle can paint gives the best performance for the buck?

Generally I end up with Krylon… Rustoleum, or Valspar just based on availability and color selection.

I have not liked Krylon DUAL (paint + Primer)... a lot of trouble with it developing aligator texture on re-coating.

it is akin to "Polyshades" in my book.

I just finished building a tool chest for my wood carving tools. It has lots of expansion room, since I currently only have 40 carving chisels. I used Rustoleum Professional High Performance Enamel spray paint. It looks great. That paint comes in larger cans than regular spray. I'll get some pix up, shortly. I painted it because it is a first article. The next tool chest will be stained and have some sort of clear finish. I learned a lot about what I wanted, based on a Gerstner chest, but want to tweak it yet again to get it closer to what I really need. It is purpose-built, and the next one will be even closer to what I need. I expect that this effort may go through several iterations before I am satisfied. I guess my sons will have to sort out the distribution after I die (say, in 20 years), since I expect that there will be at least 4 iterations, and I have 3 sons.

Sherwin Williams spray enamel is about $4 a can, which is the least expensive I've found around my area (Rustolem and Valspar are about $5-$6 a can depending on the store) and is as good or better than most other brands. However, you can get a quart of industrial oil based enamel for about $15 (or rustoleum for about $11), which when sprayed with a HVLP gun will give you much more bang for your buck (plus you can get it ANY color you want). For what you would pay in rattle cans, you can do 5-10 times as much with a quart. I gave up rattle cans for everything but the smallest of projects long ago for that reason.

Cheers,
Brad

PS: The purple HF HVLP guns can be had until the end of the month for $9.99 and are great for shooting enamel.

I like Rustoleum The clear is great for finishing projects you don't wont to brush because of the detail. When they are empty I use the cans for target practice. I have some of the cheapo $1 stuff I got somewhere and I use that for target practice when it is still full, not worth putting an any project. Sprays all over the place then you hit it.

Cheers, Jim
