I have successfully sprayed varnishes including those with polyurathane resins using my standard old compressor and non-HVLP gun. I'd surely like to try HVLP but not willing to make the investment right now. It would be nice to not waste so much due to overspray. My preference is to spray lacquer but often do use the curing as opposed to evaporative finishes when the application calls for it.
