Has there ever been a Texas picnic? If so, where, when?

If not, is there any interest?

I've not heard of one Betsy. There have only been three that I remember.

Ms Debbie in Canada.
Mark DeCou's home Elmsdale Kansas West of KC
Lee Jesbergers Home Sewell NJ.

I've made it to Mark's and Lee's

Get one started and someone will show up.

Debbie - don't blame you for not wanting to come to Texas--- But if you said you'd come I'm sure I'd have LJ's coming out my ears to meet you!!!! :)

Seriously though - with the coming holidays it may be hard to find a date until after the first of the year. But I'm a single gal who is more flexible with her time than folks that have family obligations. So if local LJ's want to meet in the coming weeks/months I'm more than happy to arrange it. Unfortuantely to this point, I've not heard from any Texans. We'll see what happens.

Betsy,

I'm from Kerrville and if we can get some people together sometime it would be great. I know there are several LJ's in Texas and several from central to east Texas. I agree that this late in the year would be problematic at best but next year offers all sorts of possiblilities.

Mark - I agree. The nice thing about this part of Texas is that we generally have pretty good weather all year which means we can pretty much pick our dates. I'm thinking sometime in February. Let me know what you think.

Betsy,

Interesting idea. I second the problem of the holidays coming up. How about waiting for good weather next spring and meeting at one of the mills we've talked about going to look at? Kind of a field trip sort of thing?

We can round up the other Texas LJ's and maybe get some more recruited in the meantime. :)

Steve - I'm one step ahead. I've got the Woods of Mission Timbers on my list of folks to call to see if they would be interested in a field trip from us. I've been there a couple of times and the fellow that runs/owns the place can really tell you about the industry and is usually very willing to give a tour of his milling and kiln areas. He's a very nice man who i think will work with us on a one day pricing for materials. But iI'll hit hiim up in the next week or two to test the waters.

My thinking on February was that it would be before March Madness for our basketball fanatics and if we wait until April you've got baseball fanatics (I confess, I'm one of those). If we don't do Feburay then May would be the next choice I think, Of course, once we figure out who/how many would be coming we can adjust the schedule depening on other committments, (read that games to watch-- and oh yeah - family commitments.

Regardless of the date-- plans need to be made. And honestly, I like organizng these things. If one idea does not work, then another will.

I'll brainstrm over the next couple of weeks and then throw the list out to cybespace to see what you all think. I have grand scheme of having 15=20 but since this is the first and only a few expressed nterest - it may be only 4 or 5. Either way - I'll make the first one work so the second one will be more popular.

I'm glad there seems to be interest in doing this. I'll come up with some ideas and post it here soon.

Dadoo-- as far as steak and beer-- hummmm I do two things well in the kitchen department - Lasagna and reservations. The last steak I did for myself was about as tough as my dog's rawhide bone. So perhaps I should consider getting a grill-- and we'll put you in charge of it. What do you think???

Also, if I can swing the mill I'd like to--maybe they'd donate some of their mesquite for a grill.

I also intend to contact Rockler and Woodcraft to see if we can swing some door prizes. The Rockler manager has been after me to do a class so maybe I can twist his arm into some door prizes if I agree to do a Saturday afternoon presentation-- would be worth it.

I'll let you know.

If anyone else is interested let me know.

Thanks.

Gary - I go to the Arlington store. It's a pretty nice store and they've got some more folks in there who are more knowledgable about woodworking.

MsDebbie - I'm certain that if I could find a way to get you here-- most of the LJ's would also come! We'd need to have the convention center!

Don - I'm from Ohio--- what do you consider central or east Texas? In Ohio central and east are about a mile from one another. Texas is a BIG place for this Buckeye.

Curious about TX lumberjocks but I got tired of looking after 15 minutes by punching TX into the search engine . Then, suggested a new site feature . . . but came up with these locales before I quit . . .

Lindale, Sulfer Springs, Waxahachie, Stephenville, Fort Worth, Houston, Rosebud, Spring, Mission, Denton, Pfluegerville. Plano, Kerrville, Alvarado, Cedar Park, Flower Mound, Dallas . . .

Where else?

I've not been to any other picnics so please give me some ideas. Right now I'm thinking of finding a site to host it - like a local mill.

I'm also thinking about door prizes and general give aways that I can gather up. Of course, there's the food thing. I'm sure the only way to do this would be to have a giant pot luck. I'm sure we could probably get a kitty together for meat to cook - but I'm not sure how others have done that.

If we can swing this in Feburary 08 I need to get cracking. It will take time to contact vendors for door prizes and I'd like to see this get on peoples calendars soon so that they don't make plans on the weekend we pick. I also need to see the number of people who are interested. If there are only 10 or so then I'll be more than happy to host it at my home. Over ten and I'll have to give my dog away - and maybe the cats-to have enough room.

I'd appreciate hearing ideas and what has worked or not worked at picnics you have been to before.

thanks

Betsy,
I'm from Texas but currently I'm in MI due to schooling. I sure wish I could make this picnic though, I'd love to meet some of ya'll. Maybe next year or something like that. I'll be coming back TX in dec '08, but I'm not sure where we'll end up. Depends on what church district needs a pastor at the time. oh well. i look forward to hearing your progress on getting this set up though!

Hello Betsy,

Sounds like a cool idea! I'm in The Woodlands, Texas, which is 35 miles north of downtown Houston. It takes a lantern and a lunch to get up to the Dallas/Ft. Worth area, but if I can I'll be there… :) Keeps us posted. Take care and all the best to you and yours!
