Hello out there, hope the new year brought much happiness to the workshops. I am starting this new table and making a jig for my lathe to cut the 120 degree dovetail joints needed to fit the legs into. I am just wondering if there is any ideas out there on how to cut the Hexacon for the bottom part of the table where the legs connect? This table has 6 sides at the bottom. I am thinking about 30 degrees on the table saw, but kind of stuck there. I think I am starting to understand the photo uploading???
Hey Pete
Looks like a cool table. Is it that you like the hexagonle look or that you don't know how to connect the legs to a round shape? Did you mean 12 degree dovetails ?
a1Jim,
I have never made a table like this, just in a dream. I have watched Norm Abram and Roy Underhill for most of my woodworking career. Norm went to Mt Vernon and made a Martha Washington's tea table with a bird cage and a rotating top. I am trying to make that table but with the hexagon bottom. I am also trying to make the jig that makes the cuts for the sliding dovetail joints for the legs. He uses a router with a jig to make a flat spot on the round table base where the legs connect and then uses the same jig set up with a different template to make the dovetail and I think his is 14 degree. he also has a 14 degree on the router table to cut the angle in the legs.
I have been to your site, I have always wanted to do what you do, but do not know how to make money at it and I was always on the move with the work I did. Great site and keep up the great work. If I am ever out your way I would love to stop in. thanks
hey Pete
looks Like chunk has the angle cut draw very nicely. Just use some scrap and work out the correct distance until you like what you see. I've had a class on making a shaker table similar to your table. If you every get close give me a yell.
You probably don't need this advice Pete, but when you rout the sliding dovetails I recommend you use a straight bit first to remove most of the waste in order to get a real clean cut with your dovetail bit. I have made some tables like this, but with a round pedestal. I made a router jig for the dovetail slots. It has an adjustable height chuck for tapered pedestals and different height settings. If you will be making a few of the tables it's pretty handy to have. That's really pretty table. Good luck with yours.
