Jwm, if you can find a belt drive it will be a lot quieter, than the direct drive. I have a sears direct 12gal, and a dewalt belt drive portable that I got to run my framing nailer for a shed project, and the dewalt chugs along and is way quieter, pricier, but its nice. My dewalt is not an oil filled compressor, but I have heard good things about the Makita compressors, though not sure about their noise level.
