Second try at a hinged lid

This small box is made from scrap pieces around the shop. Cherry box with mitered corners and red oak keys. Top and bottom panels are made from mdf veneered with lacewood. My first attempt at veneer, my second attempt with a hinged lid. The proportions are a tad ”?” in that not much fits inside, but otherwise a good learning experience.

Improving Your Serve

Made some boxes too big. I didn’t have anything for lids and was doing a craft show the following day.
Saw the shaker serving tray posted recently and thought – “That’ll work.”

Here’s my take; one walnut with curly maple – one curly maple. I attached the handels with Miller Dowels. Both trays are lined with burgundy velvet and finished with danish oil. They sold quickly.

Better than Dr. Phil

My wife hates clutter – I like to see everything I own. Here’s the compromise; the box and dividers are marblewood, mitered joints with cocobolo and rosewood keys. The top is a floating raised panel made from a knotty piece of red oak scrap. Finished with danish oil. Lined with brown velvet.

I made every mistake possible in the construction of this box and learned a heckuva lot.

It now sits on the entry table in the hall and all of my stuff can be seen by lifting the lid.

Woodworking saves another marriage!

I built the lightbox someone posted last week and used for the photos. Came out pretty nice.

In Over My Head

Recently, I have been dealing with an addiction. My name is Pruette and I’m addicted to making boxes. I can’t say that I wasn’t warned in advance – but really, you can’t get addicted after making just one, can you?

Apparently, box making is like lays potato chip laced with “crack” to the typical woodworker; You can’t get by with one. In the past two weeks I’ve made 5 specific box making jigs (most of which can be found in Doug Stowe’s “Basic Box Making” by Taunton Press) and about 20 boxes.

Here are the only two with photos. On the left is a walnut box with finger joints. The box on the right is mitered with maple keys. Both have tops made from Ambrosia Maple.

The other thing you need to know about box making is that it leads to other addictions like craft fairs.

Pray for me…
