This is a small turning from walnut burr. It was a challenge do to the numerous voids and varying grain patterns. Some of the larger voids were filled with bloodwood dust and CA. It measures 3.5” tall by 5.5” wide. All feedback and criticism are welcome.

Wow Joe, you just keep doing it! This is another fantastic turning. I love the walnut and the grain. Very creative with the bloodwood dust too…
Thanks for posting it.

This is a wonderful turning. I don’t know where you find the time to keep churning these out but I do enjoy each and every one. Keep ‘em coming.

Thanks everyone.
I received a PM asking about bloodwood dust and CA. I thought I would share in case others have the same questions.
I usually save some of the fine dust from exotic pieces that I turn. These small shavings came from my piece titled Blood Brother. I believe when filling voids in work, it is always visible regardless of what you fill it with or how good you are. Therefore, I like to fill the void with a contrasting color, turning it into a design feature as opposed to trying to hide it.
CA is cyanoacrylate adhesive, or super glue. They make various formulas of it. I used the thick, gap filling formula. I simply fill the void with CA, and then pack the dust into the void (wearing protective, disposable gloves). I repeat this a couple of times until the void is filled and proud of the surface. I then sand flush. The same technique can be used with other materials such as turquoise.

nice design, the bloodwood is a nice touch. If you can’t hide a flaw by making it disappear, then hide it by calling attention to it.

You are pretty much a master lathesman. I need to teach myself more about turning, I have a lathe that is lonely in my shop. I love to turn but I have never really turned anything useful, just fun stuff. Your work inspires me!
