Blue

Project by trifern posted 414 days ago 919 views 5 times favorited 30 comments Add to Favorites Watch

This is a piece of Catalpa. It is finished with turquoise leather dye, sprayed polycrylic, liming wax, and briwax. The color really moves and changes depending on the angle and lighting. Notice the optical illusion of photo two. The purists will cringe at the color, but I think it’s pretty cool on a bowl. All feedback welcome.

Wow!. Joe, that is simply stunning…You are a true artist!

In picture one, because of the way the grain lines up at the top…it looks transparent.

Very very cool.

Thanks for posting it.

Great artistry.

The blue is almost iridescent looking, I really like it.

I do’nt see anything wrong with artificial color. You are bringing out the best in your materials. Paint has it’s place, but I think many of us don’t like paint because it may be covering up something pretty. You are accentuating. Keep up the experimentation. It helps us all learn.

That looks great! Joe…experimenting with the dye is a cool idea…experimenting in the shop is fun…awhile back I use to sell alot of barnwood beds, but then one month I totally ran out of barnwood, so I took regular white pine and did a 4 step painting/glazing technique on it and it turned out looking like old blue jeans, it was fun and I sold alot of those blue jean beds….anyway keep up the good work….

some colors look unnatural, but this one doesn’t. – though it leans more to stone than wood in appearance. I love this color. Gonna try this process someday. I can totally see this bowl on my parents mantle.

The blue dye really brings out the grain. Another winner.

I like it…. can’t wait to try out the technique. As soon as some of these yards and tree’s get taken care of… I’m going to try it with some straight grained (boring) Maple.

trifern…awesome…I have a BUSINESS idea for you…something we should all do…

I was thinking about taking a photo of my pen blanks and printing them as cards for people so that when I give them away they can see how the pen started…

And everytime I see your work I want to see what the bowl blank looked like when you started…because the finished result is amazing…

ok…just an idea…

Wow great color. Normally I would not be thrilled with a colored bowl but this was great.
