I had this strange thought the other week – what would bunch of bowls look like if they were all sort of shoved into one another?
I suppose this might be it.
Glued up a blank of walnut and white oak – random thicknesses and orders.
Went to my computer and took five different bowl shapes and kind of munged and smooshed them all together and let my CNC Router take care of carving the inside. Since I used a 1/8” ball-nose bit, it took a really long time, but all that was needed was a bit of hand sanding afterwards.
After that was done, I set the bandsaw to 7 degrees and basically followed the inside shape to cut the outside of the bowl – this took a BUNCH of sanding afterwards to get just right.
I wanted it appear to float a bit, so I took a round-over bit on my router table to the very bottom of it.
Also, I thought the top appeared too flat, so I used a drum sander to cut three scoops into it – Not quite sure I like the affect or not….... the jury is still out.
Finish is a few coats of spray-on lacquer and then two coats of paste wax buffed to a high shine.
Overall dimensions are 9×5 x 2 1/2 inches.
